All of these systems can be installed in an airtight manner, maximizing performance. Attention should be paid to air-sealing transitions and to application of an air barrier. In the case of the light-clay assemblies, the plaster coats serve as the air barrier. None of these systems utilize vapor barriers, as all these materials are hygroscopic and allow for vapor to diffuse through them quite readily. These systems, when installed with air fins, are airtight but vapor permeable, which creates a high-performing envelope in cold climates (see chapter 8 for more on vapor permeable wall assemblies).
